An Ontology of Trees - Beech Tree Folio

Project Statement: In an effort to deepen the understanding of our connection to the natural world, this project interrogates the visual language of trees through the lens of deconstruction. Rooted in critical theory, deconstruction is a method of analysis that involves analyzing a text or concept by identifying and questioning assumptions about perceived truths. It can be used to critique established ideas in order to create space for alternative perspectives. By adapting this analytical approach to the natural world, employing fragments of photographic techniques and motifs, the project seeks to question prevailing narratives about our connection with the environment. In doing so, it aims to illuminate overlooked perspectives, fostering a richer and more nuanced dialogue about our place within the ecological systems that sustain us. This reimagining aspires to cultivate a more profound and meaningful relationship between humanity and the natural world.
